Don’t Make Assumptions with special guest Nova Wightman from Spiritual Alignment Coaching

Find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement you can completely transform your life.” Don Miguel Ruiz

The third of Don Miguel Ruiz’s agreements is ‘don’t make assumptions’. To discuss how one can apply this rule practically and consistency, Jason and Joey are joined by Nova Wightman, speaker, author, and certified life coach. Nova specialises in a concept known as spiritual alignment, defined as closing the gap between your spirituality and your humanity.

The human brain is hardwired to make up stories when it is missing relevant information – and more often than not, our inclination is to make the most negative assumption possible. Everyone is familiar with reasoning along the lines of ‘they haven’t responded to my messages; I must have done something wrong’ or ‘they are leaving early; I must have upset them’. Such negativity clouds the brain’s judgement and prevents us from functioning to our maximum capacity, or leads to arguments that emerge from a ‘why are you ignoring me’ line of questioning.

Nova runs us through one simple means of reversing this process: when missing such information, consciously choose to make up a story that makes you feel better, regardless of how likely it is it to be true. Your mind will make up a story regardless, so you may as well create one that places you into a positive mindset – this will ensure the best solution is achieved should there be an issue.

Our guest goes on to elaborate on ‘spiritual alignment’ and some of the techniques used to achieve this. Human beings have 60,000 thoughts a day, a majority of which are subconscious –   and so one wastes a lot of energy if directing thoughts towards the thoughts of others. If you present yourself with clear alignment and conscious intention, then you need not worry what others are thinking. Meanwhile a daily gratitude practice – listings 5-10 things that you are truly appreciative for that you can access in that moment – can help ensure you have a ‘force field’ that can allow you to handle whatever the day will bring.
